Our first side played their third and final friendly in preparation for the 2014 season again the touring Hearts club from Port Elizabeth, the tourists previously taking on Sunningdale City and Edgemead.
A well rounded match followed, albeit at a below temp start, with Durbanville enjoying he lion’s share of possession, but not converting into goalscoring opportunities.
The lack of cutting edge would cost us as Hearts capitalized on an unforced error to put them into the lead at the break.
A few tactical changes and clear instructions from coach Kurt Rose saw a different outfit in the second period with more purposes and controlling all areas, much higher up the pitch.
17 year old Xola Balele, who received a much deserved call up into the first side, came into the game more and had one or two chances to draw level, the equaliser eventually came from the penalty spot, via the boot of midfielder Ashley Sass, who has been the side’s regular spot kick taker for two seasons now.
Further goals from Xola Balele and Damian Gomes sealed the 3-1 victory, and rounded off a balanced performance over the 90 minutes, in particular the second half showing.
Some cracking displays from Chris Martins, on his return to Durbanville, as well as Gerald Bosman, deserves special mention. It was a good result and an overall pleasing performance from the team, also highlighting areas of improvement as we start the season in earnest next week.
Thanks to all who came out to support the teams, the players and coaches appreciate the support greatly.
The first and reserve team travel to newly promoted Bothasig on Saturday 29 March 2014, in what is to be the first official encounter of the 2014 season.
